Just on the other side of the Broad river from the explosive growth of the Bluffton Okatie area is a quiet area of serene natural splendor.

Beaufort is the crown jewel of this area, a city of rich history and laid-back Southern charm. Residents of this tranquil southern city enjoy a waterfront downtown offering river views, an amazing art scene, fine dining and antique shopping galore. The stunning antebellum architecture and natural splendor has caught the eye of Hollywood several times, with such films as The Big Chill, Forrest Gump and The Prince of Tides being partially filmed at various locations around Beaufort.

Once a year, Beaufort holds its Water Festival, a celebration dating back to nautical races along the Beaufort River that has turned into a full-blown community event. Musical performances, food, a beauty pageant, boat races and exhibitions round out what has become a ten-day event.

Of course, Beaufort has its share of golf, with courses that rival any in the world on nearly every island making up the greater Beaufort area. Stunning marsh views abound on nearly every hole.

Beaufort’s rich military tradition carries on at its three military installations, including the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, the Marine Corps Air Station and the Naval Hospital. These installations are a boom to the local economy, not to mention our national security.

Nearby Port Royal is another area rich with history, and residents enjoy the same old-fashioned hospitality and world-class dining and amenities as their neighbors in Beaufort. No trip to this scenic port town is complete without a walk on the Sands Beach boardwalk, located on the south end of Port Royal island, or an enlightening trip through the tabby ruins of Fort Frederick. Residents enjoy family picnics at Live Oaks Park with its covered oyster shed with fireplace and barbecue pit.

To truly get a feel for the area’s unique heritage, there’s St. Helena Island. Home to the Penn Center, St. Helena is a stronghold of Gullah culture, and simply the best place to fill up on some outstanding local cuisine. For stunning waterfront views, head down to Land’s End and take in the majestic views of Beaufort’s many waterways.

Hunting Island is another of the greater Beaufort area’s amazing islands, offering stunning riverfront homes and walking trails that wind through the forests and marshes of the island.

North of the Broad, there are surprises around every island. The many small islands that dot the landscape offer up a variety of southern treats for residents, and truly promise something for everyone.
