Tony Simonelli and his wife Dianne began coming to Hilton Head for family vacations in 1978, but it wasn’t until 1986, when they noticed a sign for a boat ride to “Melrose Golf Club,” that they discovered the charm of Daufuskie Island.
Out of curiosity, they decided to check out the Melrose Golf Club and discovered the natural beauty of Daufuskie Island. In 1999, the Simonellis decided to buy a lot on Daufuskie and in 2003 traded in the hustle and bustle of New Jersey to make Daufuskie Island their permanent stomping ground.
Tony (a real estate agent for Gateway Realty) and Dianne (a nurse practitioner who volunteers her expertise on Hilton Head Island) thoroughly enjoy their life on Daufuskie Island. For the Simonellis, the best part of living on Bloody Point in Daufuskie Island is the “unhurried pace.” And since a golf cart is the main mode of transportation, the lack of traffic doesn’t hurt either.
Daufuskie Island is accessible by ferry and is convenient to both Hilton Head and Savannah. The land boasts a unique collection of wildlife and scenery that won’t be found anywhere else. The island has a total of three top-notch golf courses. Planned neighborhoods on Daufuskie are Haig Point, Melrose, and Bloody Point. The island also includes a charming historic district comprising the remaining homes. More phases of development are planned for the future.
While the ferry is currently the only gateway to Daufuskie, Plantation Land Properties will soon begin construction on a lock harbor marina on the northern side of the island. The marina will include 50 slips with a separate intercoastal marina including 90 slips. The marina will be located in the Webb Tract (a largely undeveloped piece of land along the Cooper River) and will pave the way for more home construction.
Home site lots are available between $230,000 and $400,000. Homes and home sites include ocean front, golf course, marsh view, and water view. Melrose has 370 home sites and 50 homes already built.
